I’ve signed up for my local library’s Winter Reading Challenge. We have a “Bingo” board of things to read and do, and if you fill a row, column, or diagonal, you are entered into a contest and may win a prize. If you complete the whole board, you get extra chances. Guess which one I’m aiming for?
One of the challenges is to read a book written in the 19th Century and man, is that slow going! I picked Woman in White because I like mysteries, but they did not write the way we 21st Century readers like it. I have no idea how much of the narrator’s descriptions will be important later in the story, nor do I even know if any of the people we meet will play a role in solving the mystery. Plus, it’s nearly 500 pages long. I may need to choose a shorter, easier read…
Another challenge is to watch a movie adapted from a book. I am watching Our Souls at Night with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. So far, it’s really good, although sad in parts. Those two are spectacular actors, though, and I think they could act out the phone book and keep us riveted.
There are challenges to attend virtual library events over the next couple of months, to learn a new hobby, to research something at the library, and (of course) to read, read, read. I’m planning to fill out my card and maybe even win a prize!
