Finished the story for Kevin J. Anderson’s anthology (due on Halloween!). I’m going to run it past my critique group before I send it in though … just to be sure it’s anthology-ready.
I’m attending another writing conference this week via Zoom … it’s not specifically sci-fi but has a lot of great workshops and discussions. This afternoon we talked about writing a great query letter. Tomorrow and Saturday we’ll be Zooming all day long. The conference is on Mountain Time so I don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn at least.
So what were some hints about query letters? First, you should have three or four sections. An optional greeting, with the agent’s name, spelled correctly, and a reason you picked them over other agents. Next, a short Project Summary where you tell the agent your tagline or blurb. Most of the letter should be your Project Pitch, telling who your main character is, what they want, why they can’t have it, their plan to overcome that obstacle, and the stakes. Finally, include a short Bio with any experience, education, or accolades you’ve gotten.
Next up, a couple of anthologies due at the beginning of November, then a trio for December. Wish me luck!
