I know, I know: old news. But I didn’t read the book nor watch the movie when it first came out. I usually don’t care for books about video gaming, but I kept hearing good things about this one, so I dipped a toe in.
Earnest Cline quickly pulls you into the world of the young protagonist, who lives in a trailer-park slum in a world where reality is something to be escaped. I enjoyed the read, where you go from one twist to another until you reach the “Easter Egg” at the end.
If you enjoy surprises, you’ll like this book, even if you don’t ordinarily read gaming books. It’s more about the human condition than the video game, and you quickly forget the action takes place mostly in virtual reality. The movie was OK, but they made several major changes that kept me from enjoying it as much. I recommend the book over the adaptation if you must make a choice.
