Here’s what I’m reading today in science fiction:
Lou Diamond Phillips — yes, the actor guy! — has published a science-fiction retelling of the old folk tale “The Tinderbox.” In the original story, there are three dogs of varying sizes. In Phillips’ work, the “dogs” are high-tech devices of which I will speak no further. As with the original, they are my favorite part of the story.
The premise of the story is that the citizens of a high-tech planet have destroyed their world, splitting into two halves that are currently in a stable orbit around one another and their two stars. And, of course, the people living on each half hate the people on the other half. Thus, the never-ending war.
There are giants and princesses and intrigue and near-magic — and of course, there is a soldier. If you liked the original tale, do pick up this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
