For my sixtieth birthday (that can’t be right!), I spent a long weekend in New Orleans. COVID-19 has changed the landscape nearly as much as Hurricane Katrina: no open jazz clubs, no bus tours of the city, far fewer walking tours and everyone on edge about wearing your mask at all times. However, The Traveling Writer did find some good jazz (at The Couryard of 2 Sisters and on a riverboat cruise) and lots of scenic venues throughout the downtown area.
We also found plenty of great food: Creole, Cajun, and American. We tried a different restaurant for every meal and weren’t disappointed in any of them. The Traveling Writer also signed up for a cooking class at the School of Cooking, where we learned to make Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, BBQ Shrimp & Grits, and Bananas Foster Crepes.
And of course, I got to spend time with my best friend and his bestie, who came all the way from Albuquerque to spend my birthday weekend with me. Plus my roomie, of course! We ended up tired and a little sore from walking and ready for our respective beds, but it was a great weekend.
