OK, sure… it’s YA and fantasy. But I know the author personally and I enjoyed the trilogy. Plus, there are giraffes … how could you go wrong?
Princess Adana of Moniah is sent away to the neighboring kingdom of Elwar to learn to be a “lady.” As a Watcher, one of an elite band of warrior women, Adana sees no use in wearing skirts and learning which silverware to use at a state dinner. But it was her mother’s dying wish, so off she goes. She has already been engaged to the younger prince of Elwar and the two are supposed to unite the two kingdoms as they once were. But the prince falls victim to the same disease that took her mother.
What is Adana to do when her betrothed is gone? And what of the traitor who returns from a supposed death sentence to attack her homeland? With both kingdoms in turmoil, he finds it simple to take over Moniah and Elwar, as well as two of the other kingdoms. Can Adana help the resistance take back their lands? Can she trust anyone after so many trusted members of each kingdom betrayed their rulers and joined the traitor’s side? And what of her mysterious feelings for the oldest prince–the one destined to take the throne of Elwar?
The trilogy is fast-paced and suspenseful, with many twists and turns you don’t expect. There are mysterious psychic powers, strong female characters, court intrigue, and a truly evil villain. And did I mention the giraffes? If you like fantasy tales, pick up a copy and try it out. I think you’ll enjoy the ride.
