Fall is my favorite season. I love the bright colors of the leaves and the crisp blue of the sky. I like the cool mornings and the hint of smoke in the air. Fall always stirs my travel urge, too, as the wild geese wing overhead and call out.
There are several holidays celebrated during the Fall. Of course, the main one is Halloween, with its spookiness and good-natured begging. Who doesn’t like dressing up and pretending to be someone else for a night? We have one of “those” neighborhoods, where everyone brings their kids for the good stuff, so we usually sit on the porch and hand out candy while in costume. I do like a good masquerade party, though – or a sci-fi convention!
Another traditional Fall holiday is the American Thanksgiving, where we celebrate the harvest and the coming of the Europeans to our shores. I always wonder if the Natives didn’t have a suspicion that they were in for it when those first settlers landed and started clearing the forests…
The Hindu festival of Diwali is usually held in the Fall as well. I don’t celebrate that one personally, but I enjoy seeing the lights and everyone dressed in their best new clothing. Let’s face it, who doesn’t like a holiday that involves gift-giving and firecrackers?
What are some of your favorite Fall activities? Do you like raking leaves into gigantic piles, then diving in? What about carving pumpkins and decorating your house and yard? Maybe you enjoy taking an off-season trip somewhere, or lighting the first fire in your fireplace. Comment and let me know.
