I found a new(-ish) show on Amazon that looked interesting. Sissy Spacek & JK Simmons star as an elderly (when did we all get old?) couple with a secret … underneath their shed is a capsule that transports anyone who enters to a room on another planet.
The show is a little slow to start, in my opinion, as we learn about the couple’s past, their nosy neighbor, & Irene’s recent fall, which scared both of them. But once we witness the chamber, things start happening pretty quickly. Irene is planning to step out of the airlock in the otherworldly room, ending what she sees as a hopeless life, when she realizes she isn’t alone. A young man, injured & covered in blood, needs her help.
Once she gets him back into the chamber and so to the room beneath their shed, she calls Frank and they manage to get the man into their late son’s old room. Of course, the big question is, whether or not he’s from Earth. We eventually learn that there is a cult, totally terran, who has figured out how to use the network of capsules scattered around on Earth to travel from one capsule to another. So it seems as if the young man is probably an escapee from this cult, But…
I enjoyed this series once it got going. I’ve always liked Sissy Spacek as an actress and JK Simmons, while not as familiar to me, does a good job as the husband. And, of course, the young man has to be exotic and gorgeous looking (do they even make normal-looking young actors nowadays?). There are cultists and counter-cultists and intergalactic tracking devices implanted into people’s legs and more than enough intrigue for this viewer. And it’s not as dystopian as most of the stuff out there today, which is good. I’d recommend this show if you like Spacek and/or Simmons. They do a good job and the plot is believable … well, believable if you believe in sci-fi, of course.
