It’s First Wednesday, so time for another IWSG blog!
September’s Question: What genre would be the worst one for you to tackle and why?
My worst genre would be horror. I have way too much imagination to even read horror stories and if I tried to write one, I’m sure I would scare myself into nightmares. I’ve read some horror in my time, especially during college, when Stephen King scared me into never going into a bathroom where the shower curtain was fully drawn! But mostly, I steer clear of the genre, even during critique groups. Brrr!
I’m not very good at writing mystery stories, but I love reading them. I tend to be a straight-forward writer, progressing from point A to point B without a lot of tangents. But a good mystery story has so many red herrings and side trips! That’s hard for me to write and my mystery attempts usually end up being more like adventure stories anyway.
I can write romance, though it’s not my favorite genre to read. The genre has a lot in common with what I write—get the characters interested, toss some big roadblocks in their way, then resolve everything in the last chapter.
I think I’m fairly good at nonfiction, too, not that I’ve written a lot of it. I used to teach school, though, and nonfiction is a lot like teaching—get the point across in an interesting, hopefully amusing, fashion.
What is your favorite and least-favorite genre to read and to write? I’d love to know!
I don’t think I could write romance as a stand-alone genre, I could however write it to enhance my characters in other genres. I think I might be able to pull off a horror genre with a little time
I, too, prefer my romance mixed in with something else like paranormal, gothic, mystery, or sci-fi. Have fun with the horror LOL
