It’s First Wednesday so time for another Insecure Writer’s Support Group post! Here’s what we’re thinking about in the month of April:
April 5 question – Do you remember writing your first book? What were your thoughts about a career path on writing? Where are you now and how is it working out for you? If you’re at the start of the journey, what are your goals?
I wrote my first stories as a child. Of course, none of them were published—they were pretty rubbish. However, I started writing my first novel when I went back to college for my second degree. I never finished that one, but it led directly to the one I did finish. At the time, I wasn’t really thinking about a career as a writer—it was just something really fun that I enjoyed doing with my spare time. Now, however, I think of myself as a professional writer with published stories under my belt. I have real hopes that the novel I’ve finished will attract an agent’s attention and be published traditionally or with a hybrid publisher of some sort. I don’t think I have the funds for a marketing department of my own, so I’m aiming for someone who can help with that. I’d say writing is working out pretty well for me, especially in the short story department. I’ve got some published works under my belt & even won some awards (nothing huge but I can honestly say I am an “award-winning” author now).
My goals as a writer are to sell some books, which will provide me with a little bit of extra income during my real-life retirement. It would be nice if I could make enough so that I could cut back on my working days, but I’ll take whatever comes my way. It would also be nice if I got to the point where I could attend conferences as a guest lecturer instead of just an attendee…
