I often have a tough time deciding on what to write on the old blog! I’ve copied several lists from other blog writers and decided to do my own version of a topic list.
Topics About Writing:
- Writing in General: write a blog about how to write or about how you write.
- Genre: write about genre word count, tropes, conventions, etc.
- Characters: write about inventing or naming your characters.
- Post photos or artwork of your characters.
- Dialogue: write about how to come up with convincing dialogue or how to write dialogue properly.
- Plot: write about how to come up with a good plot or how to spot plot holes.
- Setting: write how to use setting as a character not just a background.
- Post photos or artwork of your favorite settings.
- Show vs. Tell: write about how to show action vs. telling what’s going on and write how to know when to do each one.
- Editing: write about editing tips and tricks or about how and when to put on your “editor’s hat.”
- Writing a Series: write about tips and tricks for writing a series instead of a stand-alone book.
- Writer’s Block: write about how to avoid this problem–or about why it doesn’t really exist.
- Obstacles: write about how to overcome challenges and obstacles in a writer’s life.
Topics About the Author:
- Write about “A Day in the Life.”
- Write about what software you use to write with (or which pen you like best if you write longhand).
- Write about how you stay organized.
- Write about how you came up with your current story ideas and characters.
- Write about a workshop or convention you attended and what you learned.
- Write about books you have read that helped you learn how to write better.
- Write about how you recharge your creativity.
- Write about how you stay inspired.
- Write about your first piece of writing.
- Write about your plans for the future.
- Write about your mission as an author.
- Post photos of your writing space.
- Post photos of your cover art or cover ideas.
- Post photos of yourself at events.
- Host a book or swag giveaway.
- Write about your hobbies when you’re not writing.

- Make up a song playlist for your character(s) or for a book.
- Have your readers submit questions and answer them in a blog post (or several).

- Write about critiques: beta readers and critique groups and why they are important.

- Write about an author who has influenced or mentored you.

- Write about the writing or publishing industry.

- Interview another author.
- Write about reality: post the latest scientific news for a science-fiction writer, historical facts for a historical novel, romantic date ideas for a romance, or police procedural for a mystery.
- Write about your favorite books as a child.
- Write about your top 5 heroes/heroines and villains.
- Have your readers help you come up with a reading list for the year: 12 books you should read.
- Interview your local librarian.
- Write about great gifts for writers, especially around Christmas.
- Review a movie based on a book.

- Write about your favorite book covers (for other authors’ books).
- Share writing advice from other authors.
- Write about anyone who has helped you research your book.
