It’s First Wednesday, so it’s time for another Insecure Writer’s Support Group post! This month, we’re focusing on NaNoWriMo! What is that, you ask? Read on to find out!

November is National Novel Writing Month. Have you ever participated? If not, why not?
I have been a loyal NaNoWriMo member since 2011. I wrote a “novel” that year, which was actually a series of interconnected short stories, and sold it in 2012. Haven’t sold anything else I’ve written during the following Novembers, but I’ve been pretty consistent with my writing. I can’t claim to have participated every single year, but when I do commit, I generally “win” (your prizes are virtual things like badges, banners, and coupons for various writing-related software).
This year, I’m going to be trying to get a head start on Book 2 of my science fiction series, which is about aliens exiled from a hive mind society who have landed on Earth & are trying to pass as human. Book 1 is pretty much finished, except for some editing in the saggy middle section, so I think I’m about ready to start querying some agents. I actually have a pitch session coming up this weekend at a writing conference, so wish me luck!
50,000 words is technically a novel, but most genre fiction runs longer, so I’ll just be giving myself a good head start on Book 2. If you’re participating this year, my handle is velyrhorde—you can send me a friend request if you like!
