I recently inherited the local Sisters in Crime chapter. First, I was just a Board Member at Large, then the entire board walked off without notice, leaving four of us holding the bag. I volunteered to be Secretary at that point, figuring that was a job for a writer if anything was. It’s a lot of work, but I was enjoying it. Then, the current president and treasurer also walked off without notice, leaving me and the Vice President. This means I’m now the President/Secretary, since the VP said she couldn’t possibly run things.
Fortunately, we managed to find someone to help out as Treasurer, so there are at least three of us. I’m scrambling to find speakers for the rest of the year, write the newsletters and send them out on time, run the monthly meetings, and coordinate everything involved in the above with my day job. I even drove down to Columbia to meet with the other state chapter and try to coordinate a joint meeting for later in the Spring. My writing is falling by the wayside unfortunately, though I have hopes that once I get the speakers lined up, I can relax a bit and concentrate on my own creative endeavors.
If anybody had told me a year ago that I’d be in this predicament, I’d have just laughed and said there was no way I’d volunteer for such responsibility. And now it’s looking as if the three of us are stuck with the jobs for the time being.
