It’s First Wednesday, so time for another Insecure Writer’s Support Group post! This one’s about your English class…
September 4 question – Since it’s back to school time, let’s talk English class. What’s a writing rule you learned in school that messed you up as a writer?
Sometimes I miss the old school days…nothing to do but study and turn in homework! Then again, it was a stressful time that I probably don’t want to experience again. I loved English class, though, especially when we had to write something for an assignment.
I don’t especially recall any one rule that messed me up however. Our teacher always said “Learn the rules so you can break them when needed” so she was ahead of the game. I think one of the “rules” I break most often is “Never start a sentence with a preposition” because I do that an awful lot!
I also use sentence fragments a good bit, especially in a tense fiction scene. But who’s counting, right?
I forgot about the preposition rule! It was always never end the sentence and never begin a sentence – those poor prepositions always having to be in the middle.
Yes! And nowadays you can stick a preposition anywhere you want to.
