Matt Haig (of The Midnight Library fame) has a new one out.
Retired maths teacher Grace Winters is left a cottage on a Spanish island by a former colleague. Grace cannot imagine why her former friend would do such a thing, but with her life at a dead end, she flies to Ibiza with a passport, her luggage, and a one-way ticket. Once there, she begins to look into her former friend’s mysterious disappearance and finds not all is as it seems in the Mediterranean.
I enjoyed this one as much as The Midnight Library. Grace is a crotchety old lady, but she is a great character and you start to care about her almost immediately. She’s just too grumpy not to! And as she grows and changes during the course of her investigations, you cheer for her. You’ll not guess the ending, so I’m not going to spoil anything by hinting at it. If you liked The Midnight Library, you’ll like this one. And if you like science fiction with a little spookiness on the side, you should check out The Life Impossible.
