Velyr have four languages on the home planet: male (a high-pitched language that females and humans cannot hear), female (a lower pitched language that males and humans cannot hear), common (a mid-range tonal language that humans can hear) and a sign language that they use when hunting on the home planet.

As all velyr are connected to one another and to the Net, thus language does not shift, and velyr all over the planet speak one tongue. However, as the soslannyy have found, this does not prevent new idioms and words from popping up over a period of centuries.

This glossary will change as the author adds new words, so check back often. Many of the words have found their way into human tongues, so they may sound familiar if you speak a language other than English.

Alet (ah-LET) – modern velyr slang; crude term for penis

Ahmaq (AH-mak) – modern velyr slang; asshole

Alzawjib (ahl-ZAW-jib) – male spouse in an all male group (Zawjib – female spouse/lover) – shorthand Alzawj (al-ZAW-juh)/Zawj (honey/darling/etc)

Ayfek (AY-fek) – modern velyr slang; filthy, used as a curse word

Bhash (BHASH) – modern velyr slang; alien, meaning from another planet, aka human.

Jahim (jah-HEEM) – modern velyr slang; Hell, used as a curse word

Khabhar (khab-HAR) – modern velyr slang; a laboratory

Khara (KHAR-uh) – modern velyr slang; shit, used as a curse word

Kurat (ku-RAT) – velyr ball game similar to soccer or football

Kyr (KEER) – fungal symbiotic found within velyr hair and skin cells; photosynthetic with red light, provides limited energy during youth but more as it accumulates during aging process.

Lilwara (lil-WAR-uh) – modern velyr slang, get back

Madha (MAD-hah) – modern velyr slang, what (as in madha jahim, what the hell?)

Muhtlal  (MOOT-lal) crazy from loneliness; a condition caused by an Exile being cut off from the Net for too long

Puka (POOK-ah) – childish way of referring to a bowel movement

Qi (Kee) – velyr board game similar to chess

Raiji (RAY-gee) – the velyr equivalent of a god; the mythical creator of the race, who designed the velyr and possibly the Net as well. It is not known what type of organism Raiji might have been, or even if it was organic or was itself a created organism.

Sakhif (sak-HEEF) – modern velyr slang, crude term for having sex

Shaisa (SHAY sah) – velyr; home planet version of tea or coffee (with more caffeine)

Sharmout (shar-MOOT) – modern velyr slang; son of a bitch

Soslannyy (sohs-LAHN-ee-ee): The Exiled, what the Earth velyr are called on the home planet 

Tafaum (ta-fa-OOM) – modern velyr slang; understand (as in “get it”)

Taqtar (TAK-tar) – modern velyr slang;  fuck it

Tiaoqi (TYAO-kee) – velyr board game similar to checkers

Yarkda (YARK-dah) – modern velyr slang; Get, as in “beat it”

Zawjib (ZAW-jib) – female lover/spouse; shortened to Zawj (ZAW-juh) – honey, darling, etc. 

Zhand (ZHAND) – modern velyr ball game similar to soccer but more violent
