Velyr were designed to live on their desert planet, orbiting a red star. They are Augmented during late childhood, linking their minds to the sentient computer Net that runs the planet. This connection is at the nape of the neck, and the Net-link has many hair-thin “antennae” that are typically braided into the spinal mane.

As such connections, velyr on the home planet do not consider themselves individuals. Rather, they see themselves as “cells” or units in the great hive mind of the planet. Everyone has a specific function in the Net, assigned based on talents shown during childhood, and everyone knows exactly what their role in society is.

Velyr are a matriarchal society, with each city ruled by a council of females who work directly with the planetary computer to keep order. Males are seen as more emotional and less logical, and thus not fit to run the society. They’re also somewhat expendable, as there are usually slightly more males than females, so they’re typically the ones doing the more dangerous jobs.

Velyr on the home world live mostly underground to avoid the excessive heat of their desert planet. They excavate towns within mountain systems, digging down five to six stories. They do like natural light, so many courtyards are included in the design of their towns. They also plant trees and flowers within these courtyards. Even though they do not eat plants, velyr do appreciate their beauty as decoration.

Velyr are also encouraged to develop a creative hobby outside their useful work for the colony. Thus, the towns are also decorated with sculpture and paintings, and velyr musicians can be found performing at all hours throughout the public courtyards.
